The Pre-Great One

Since tomorrow is Wrestlemania and possibly The Rock’s last match (though you can never say for sure) I thought I would post this clip looking back at his early days. Yes, before he was The Rock, he was Flex Kavana in the USWA!

As for the match itself, it is tough to judge because there isn’t much there. You can make the argument that the USWA wasn’t confident enough in Kavana’s ability, which is why they cut to commercial and kept it short, but that doesn’t really add up. After all he was getting called up to the WWF and would appear at Survivor Series less than three months later. I think it was more just poor time management on the USWA’s part. On a random note it is fun to see Kavana do Rock’s little kip-up move.

The promo beforehand I find much more interesting to watch. If you have seen Rocky Maivia promos you can attest to just how cringe worthy they are. This one isn’t great either. Still, I’d argue that he came off a little bit better than The Blue Chipper, which is probably because the Maivia gimmick was so generic. At least Kavana was a fun goof and is an interesting oddity to look at retroactively. Kavana doesn’t appear comfortable though and is dare say nervous looking.

Anyway, I am hoping to see Rock and John Cena deliver a classic though I won’t expect Rock/Hogan.

Where Has Albert Been for Seven Years?

Since I posted an odd match from a lengthy title reign yesterday, I thought I would post a more normal match from a good title reign today. I also wanted to talk about one of the teams in this IWGP Tag Team Championship match. Unless Boris Zhukov is making his long awaited WWE return, the Lord Tensai teasers WWE has been airing are obviously pointing to Matt Bloom, the man who once played Albert returning. So what has he been up to for the past seven years? Well, as this match shows he has massively improved and honed his craft in Japan.

This match gives you a chance to see the soon to be Tensai wrestling fairly recently (less than a year ago). It also shows him teaming with Karl Anderson, who as far as I know has not been contacted by WWE. This raises the question: should he be brought in? It could be a great way to really jumpstart WWE’s non-existent tag division, but I just don’t see it happening. Also, while Anderson is a capable hand what I find most similar between him and Arn Anderson is their unusual way of aging. I remember seeing Karl wrestle in person half a decade ago and he didn’t look much different. He seems to have been born looking 35 (though admittedly with a great build). Since WWE is targeting the youth demographic I can only see this working against him.

Getting back to the match itself, look for Giant Bernard (Tensai) and Anderson to come off as complete monsters, kind of similar to the Bigelow/Vader team I posted about a few days ago. That powerbomb on the outside is sick! Also, Naito does a hell of a job selling. Ricky Morton would be proud.

An Unusual Title Defense

As just about anyone who follows the independent wrestling scene in America knows before Daniel Bryan held the World Heavyweight Championship in WWE, he held the ROH World Championship as Bryan Danielson. Danielson held the ROH World Championship for more than a year during which he defended against the best talent the indies had to offer. Such names included the usual suspects like Samoa Joe, Chris Sabin and Austin Aries. However, the most puzzling defense during that time had to be this match against “The Ugandan Giant” Kamala.

As one might expect it caused quite a stir on the Internet and was built up solely as a novelty match. Oddly enough the match is not played out strictly for laughs. It actually has some pretty solid brawling in it. In a way it shows an early effort by Bryan to work around the limited technical skills of some bigger wrestlers, a quality that would help him with his future matches against The Big Show and Mark Henry. However, though I won’t spoil the ending I will mention that it leaves a lot to be desired.

Japan Needs a Hero

There are a few reasons I wanted to post this match. First, Chris Hero was my favorite independent wrestler from 2007 until the time WWE snatched him up. Second, Go Shiozaki was given a WWE tryout match three months after this match took place. Here he looks pretty impressive, but for whatever reason WWE decided to pass on him. It makes me wonder how they will eventually handle Hero or as he is now known as, Kassius Ohno. Lastly, NOAH, the company this match took place in is now facing trouble as according to f4wonline.com their ties to the Yakuza, essentially the Japanese Mafia, were recently revealed. This is the same thing that helped to bring down PRIDE, a much larger MMA company.

Anyway, as for the match itself there are a lot of hard chops that really make you wince. Also, look out for Go’s super kick/spinning lariat combo. Absolutely devastating!

2 Big Men, 1 Team

Here is a monster size treat! Over a decade ago I remember first reading about the Bam Bam Bigelow/Vader tag team. As these are two of the best big men in modern wrestling I was really anxious to see them in action. However, since this was in the pre-YouTube days all I could find of them was this picture:

Fortunately, YouTube emerged and I finally got to see what I had been waiting for. Perhaps surprisingly given my high expectations, they did not disappoint. There are a lot of good spots in this match and it has a nice pace. Also, Scott Steiner is a monster even back in 1992. Look at that one suplex! It really is like a Kaiju movie!

One of My Favorite Japanese Gimmicks x 3

Seriously, how can you beat Tiger Mask? Here is a rarity as you not only get one Tiger Mask, but three! Here Tiger Mask I, III and IV take on Jushin Liger, The Great Sasuke and Ultimo Dragon. Of course Tiger Mask I is way past his prime, but still delivers better than most guys half his age!

Also, if you like Tiger Masks you might find it interesting to know that at one point there were plans for a Tiger Mask V. He even apparently wrestled, but after an inquiry through FAN it became clear that getting any footage of him is quite difficult. Still, a poster on FAN was nice enough to produce this pic:

Here is Ikuhisa Minowa portraying Tiger Mask V alongside the original Tiger Mask. As I mentioned on FAN I guess his short stint would make him the George Lazenby of Tiger Masks!

Kicking Off With…

I thought I would start off with a bang and post this epic comedy battle royal. I originally watched it in parts and haven’t gotten a chance to view all of this particular video. However, I have skimmed it and it appears to be all there. Plus this way you don’t have to jump around YouTube looking for the rest of it!

Look out for WWE alumni, TAKA Michinoku and Yoshihiro Tajiri. Also, one WWE Hall of Famer makes an appearance and gives a better performance than he has delivered in years.
