Goldberg Rules the Ring in Japan

Fans are still clamoring for Brock Lesnar to return so in the spirit of that I thought I would post a match…not featuring Brock Lesnar. Instead here is one of his “classic” Wrestlemania opponents “Career Endin’” Bill Goldberg. Years before Brock wrestled in NJPW and before Goldberg’s disappointing run in the WWE, Goldberg had a stint in AJPW. With Goldberg’s reputation for injuring opponents and to paraphrase a former champion, Japan’s reputation for not only encouraging stiff matches, but allowing them you have to respect anyone who wrestled him there.

The encounter does not last long as Goldberg does his Ultimate Warrior shtick with a lot of hoopla surrounding what is essentially a squash match. Oddly enough despite all the WCW Goldberg elements this match has including Goldberg’s classic entrance and the bout not even being four minutes, Goldberg does not pull out the jackhammer or the spear. He just grabs one of Taiyo Kea’s legs and one of his breasts and then drives him down to the mat. After the match Goldberg gives a promo where he appears to be having an asthma attack. Also, Ultimo Dragon makes a cameo.

…And Now the Exciting Conclusion

I thought I would build up some suspense to the finals of PAIN LIMIT 2010 by not posting it for some days. Of course if you really wanted to you could have searched for it yourself, but oh well. If you did that you wouldn’t get my expert analysis (yawn) of the match. If you have not already watched the two semi-finals matches they can be viewed here and here.

Anyway, luckily for Jun Kasai there is no bucket involved in this match. However, some tables, light tubes and a couple of big hunks of glass are involved. There are plenty of ridiculous spots in this one. The best no doubt is Kasai’s jump off the balcony onto MASADA through a table. In the old days I believe commentators had a name for that: suicide. Also, look for some of the other tournament’s combatants to make appearances observing the match. You would think it was the Super J Cup or something.

The winner and the loser cut promos after the match and MASADA trying to speak Japanese is an abomination, but at least he has heart.

Best of the Super Juniors Lives Up To The Name

As good as some of the matches that NJPW have produced have been they have only put on four, 5 star matches according to Dave Meltzer. While some may argue that more NJPW matches are worthy of this ranking, I don’t think anyone could convince me that this bout is unworthy.

After the wrestlers feel each other out the match starts to pick up about six minutes in when the two trade smacks to the face. El Samurai then attempts a double knee drop from the top rope, but Koji Kanemoto moves out of the way. It looks particularly painful as Samurai hits the bare mat with full impact. Samurai also sells the heck out of the move and Kanemoto immediately goes after the knees.

Samurai hits a breathtaking three move combo about halfway through the match. First, he hits a lariat that is so sexy that the commentators would have affairs with it if it was at all possible. Next, Samurai suplexes Kanemoto outside and follows it up with a suicide dive so the two can finally take a break.

With all the top rope moves including, but not limited to a reverse Frankensteiner, multiple moonsaults and a body slam that has to be seen to be believed it is no wonder that Samurai loses his mask before all is said and done.

All things considered in addition to earning Meltzer’s respect, the match has the rare distinction of possibly being the best match of both in the careers of both competitors.

6 Ways WWE Could Benefit From Their Military Ties

In honor of Memorial Day I thought I would make a list related to the military. Since WWE gives out free tickets to soldiers, has had a plethora of military gimmicks and its top star has even portrayed a marine (quite crappily, but I digress) a WWE/military list seemed the way to go. Not to mention thus far I have only made WWE related lists. Still, Vince McMahon is a businessman first and foremost and so I give you 6 Ways WWE Could Benefit from their Military Ties!

1. Have Title Changes at WWE Tribute to the Troops

Currently WWE Tribute to the Troops is treated more or less like a house show. While good matches are put on, main event storylines are rarely touched upon, some production value is missing and titles never change hands. To make matters worse, WWE has had at least one title change opportunity that could have been memorable. In 2003 and early 2004 The Big Show was doing a whole lot of nothing with the WWE United States Championship until he finally lost it to John Cena at Wrestlemania XX. At the 2003 WWE Tribute to the Troops Cena also beat The Big Show, but not for the title. Having a title change then could have been a feel good moment instead of a forgettable Wrestlemania opener. Aside from this one example having title changes at Tribute to the Troops would add an element of surprise to the show, be a fun way to cap off the year and bring diversity to the location of where title changes happen.

2. Have Big Show Use his Camouflage

On the topic of The Big Show the big lug has been lumbering around in camouflage for a while now. He recently turned heel so we might have to wait a while, but I say once he goes back to lovable, goofball Big Show he makes the most of his camouflage. The Big Show could sneak up behind guys while they are cutting promos and pretend to blend in to the background when suddenly he attacks them. The commentators could play it up that Big Show doesn’t realize the only reason he manages these assaults is not because he is capable of stealth attacks, but because he is simply too big to defeat, yet Big Show is too much of a dunce to realize it. Better yet, screw waiting for the face turn! Have Big Show put on an insane Marlon Brando from Apocalypse Now gimmick. He attacks opponents using the camouflage as a disguise, but is too insane to realize it does absolutely nothing. Yes, this has the potential to be awful(ly entertaining)!

3. Have G.I. Joe 12 Inch Figures of WWE Stars

Now before the toy enthusiast get at me, I have done some research and from what I gather WWE has released some 12 inch figures over the years. However, if you ever collected G.I. Joes you’ll recall that they look quite different from what is pictured here and come with a boatload of accessories. Plus, if you look at the customer reviews on that link this figure apparently only made one grandmother happy. If WWE was making the most out of their toy department they would make a flock of grandmothers happy! Perhaps even a stampede!  Not to mention that if you have figures of the same size and quality you can have more realistic matchups. After all who wouldn’t want to see a Kane vs. Destro mask vs. mask match?

4. Have Randy Orton Cut a Heel Promo on the Military

Now I know a lot of people will say this stinks of heel Sgt. Slaughter in 1991 and maybe it does. However, one of the most annoyingly overused phrases on online wrestling forums is that the best gimmicks are a wrestler’s own personality with the volume turned way up. The reason it is overused is because for the most part it is true. Also true is the fact that in 1999 Randy Orton abandoned the U.S. military. Now, if Orton ever wants to get cheap heat and he is definitely not above doing so (just ask Eddie Guerrero fans) all he needs to do is bring up this fact in a heelish manner. I’m not saying make this the central part of his gimmick, but something more along the lines of what Kurt Angle did in 2005. Back then Kurt was trying desperately to get fans to boo him when the Cena hate was so strong that on at least one occasion Daivari got cheered over Cena. So Kurt did a little of his own turning the volume up, dipped into crazy Kurt and took some swipes at the military. While it wasn’t enough to get Cena universally loved (nothing is) it at least showed a clear attempt to make Kurt more of a heel, plus he got his comeuppance in the end. Next time Orton goes heel he could do this rather than being the poor man’s “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. While casual fans may like Orton’s face Austin enough a latter day heel Austin portrayed by Orton may be a bit too weak.

5.  Have Cena Get Attacked During his Salute

If you disliked the idea of Orton cutting a promo on the military then you’ll absolutely hate this one! I don’t recall this ever happening and am surprised if it hasn’t as it seems like such an easy way to get cheap heat. Anyway, it is pretty self-explanatory, have Cena do his standard salute and in the middle of it he is attacked from behind and given a thorough beat down. This could be especially effective if it was done in a big military town or daresay Tribute to the Troops. However, if something like that happened on Tribute to the Troops then the night had better end with Cena performing a devastating Attitude Adjustment to the attacker.

6. Hire Jeremiah Riggs

In a competitions filled with hacks and a few talented prospects thrown in, Jeremiah Riggs really stood out as something unique on the revamped Tough Enough. While Riggs had no experience as a wrestler, he did have experience being a bad ass serving a tour with the United States Army in Afghanistan and dabbling in MMA.  Also, on his first appearance on Raw with the rest of the Tough Enough crew he was the only one who showed any mic skills. So why isn’t he in the WWE? Well, he has kind of a big mouth or stands up for himself, depending on who you ask. So what? If this is really a problem those in charge of WWE developmental just need to pull him in and mold him a bit more. While they’re at it they could also do well by bringing in Luke Robinson as his partner. How Silent Rage was chosen over either of them still puzzles me.

Jun Kasai Finds a Bucket the Hard Way

In contrast to the match posted yesterday the other semi-final match of FREEDOMS’ PAIN LIMIT 2010 was a more straightforward hardcore bout right off the bat. The DDT into the bucket of thumbtacks looks more like a match-ender than a beginning spot. I’m surprised that I can’t recall seeing that spot before.

The match is short and sweet at just under six minutes. You could watch it on a 15 minute snack break at work and still have enough time to run across the street and buy a bagel. Despite this by the end of the encounter, Kasai is covered in thumbtacks, especially on his back. Inematsu doesn’t look much better.

A Technical Wrestling Match OMG…Wait…What Are You Doing?

At first I was thinking of posting this bout as an example of a bad hardcore match, but then I just realized these guys have a concept of pacing. The encounter is pretty good and at first glance given that there are no weapons immediately visible and GENTARO’s attire it looks like it could just be a standard technical wrestling match. Then MASADA starts stabbing GENTARO in the face and well the words, “MASADA starts stabbing GENTARO in the face” should tell you everything you need to know.

Despite GENTARO’s appearance it is worth mentioning that he is just as sick as MASADA. Given how he plots the pain he inflicts on MASADA at some points he reminds me of a bad guy from Men Behind the Sun.

This was a semi-final in FREEDOMS’ PAIN LIMIT 2010, an annual two day tournament held in August.

Abdullah The Butcher Carves Up Giant Warrior

Since it has been a while since I posted some classic WWC action I thought I would write about this little gem. Yes, Abdullah in WWC in a match featured “The Bloody Bloody Matches of the Caribbean #2,” so you can expect an oozing bloodbath.

Some random thoughts:

*Abdullah apparently throws the WWC tape library at Giant Warrior early on. No wonder so much WWC footage is bad quality!

*I wonder if Carlos Colon made Giant Warrior wear those white pants. Regardless, they really sell how violent the match is as they quickly become red.

*I’m used to seeing basketball hoops on the indies in America, but I guess in Puerto Rico they don’t bother taking them down even in their arenas.

*Upon initially finding this match it made me think of a potential Abdullah The Butcher vs. The Ultimate Warrior match. I’m sure that would be a train wreck, but an entertaining train wreck, much like this match.

* Spoiler Alert! The ref throws the match out after getting hit in the head with a boot by Warrior. You have to love those WWC rules as leading up to this the competitors had spent the entire match destroying each other with foreign objects.

Dragon Gate USA Showcases Light Heavyweights

This match is good to watch to see what spots the light heavyweights in this match are capable of in one brief outing.

Some other notes:

*My two favorites in this match are probably Sami Callihan and Frightmare. I would really like to see them in a singles match on a bigger stage somewhere down the line. Who knows maybe it could even be a Wrestlemania main event someday? Knowing the WWE though, Frightmare would have to pack on 100 pounds of muscle.

*It’s interesting that they included Rexx Reed in this match who sticks out like a sore thumb. Not that it’s a bad thing, but I would have liked to see him do more power moves to make him really stick out and provide a contrast in styles.

*The best part of the match is about halfway through when everyone is doing maneuvers out onto the floor. This culminates in Jigsaw doing a sweet 450 splash on top of everyone.

*Given the recent mischief AR Fox has been involved in, I couldn’t help, but chuckle when one of the commentators said, “AR Fox is not going to want to go blow for blow, shot for shot…”

*I would really like to see this match done again as an elimination bout with double the time it was given. It’s a great spotfest, but with the talent involved, it could be even more.

Paul London Needs a Job

Believe it or not Paul London has been out of the WWE for nearly four years. Since that time London has had stints in Dragon Gate USA, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Lucha Libre USA as well as appearances at events like the debut of Pro Wrestling Superstars shown here.

If TNA really wants to spice up either their X division or tag division they could benefit greatly by hiring London. While it is not impossible for London to show up in WWE again it looks pretty unlikely. London would probably best work in the X division. Yet, as this match shows he could benefit the tag division as well even if he is not paired with Brian Kendrick.

The Funk Brothers Rip Through Japan

This match has a little bit of it all and features four guys who though brought up wrestling stateside seemed quite at home working in Japan. I enjoy Terry Funk’s performance in this match the most as he puts a unique spin on the Ricky Morton role. Terry trying against all odds to get out of Brody’s piledriver and then falling over like a tree in the forest after a Stan Hansen chop really makes him look sympathetic.

The bout really picks up towards the end when absolute bedlam erupts and the referee takes a nasty bump. This chaos leads up to the very end of the match when Funk goes completely insane and fiercely attacks Brody, Hansen and even the ref.

Looking at the match objectively though, I think Dave Meltzer rated it a tad too high with a 5 star rating. Don’t get me wrong it is a great match and the crowd is super into it. In fact if the match took place in WWC there probably would have been a riot. However, Meltzer has incredibly high standards for 5 star matches and this one doesn’t quite seem to measure up. Think about it. This match was rated 5 stars, but neither Michaels/Undertaker Wrestlemania match, any Rock/Austin battle, nor a single match in Chris Jericho’s entire career earned that distinction.

In the end regardless of my opinion or even of the opinion of Mr. Meltzer this encounter is certainly worth a watch!
