Terry Funk, a Brainbuster and a Table

by Daniel Johnson

Terry Funk and Abdullah The Butcher vs. Tarzan Goto and Tomoaki Honma

Despite being well, well past their primes in 2002, Terry Funk and Abdullah The Butcher are still a ton of fun to watch in this match. In fact, The Butcher may literally be close to a ton here. Look at those bosoms! Plus, we get to see Tarzan Goto who you may remember as the wrestler who took on Dan Severn for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship on the night Mick Foley wore that lovely crimson mask.

For this match as soon as the streamers go flying so do Funk and Tarzan. They battle outside the ring for a bit, but the referee manages to restore order. Funk likewise gets in control of the match and even busts out his signature spinning toe hold. Unfortunately for Funk, Tarzan also busts out a signature maneuver. Even more unfortunately for Funk this signature maneuver is stabbing his opponent with a fork.

Tarzan goes wild and aside from his fork it looks like he also grabs a pen from the commentary table at one point to stab Funk with. Tarzan’s time on top is bound to end though and Abdullah grabs Tarzan’s fork to poke at Tarzan and turn the tables. Wait a minute…did I say tables? That’s right, Honma comes in with a table. He soon regrets it when Funk delivers a brainbuster to him through it. Funk and Abdullah then take turns walloping Honma with pieces of the table before The Butcher ends it.

Rhino’s Rampage

A lot of matches in the NJPW New Japan Cup tend to be solid strong style bouts, but few of them are nearly hardcore matches like this one from the 2008 edition. With all this brawling all over the arena it reminds me of Abdullah The Butcher and Brusier Brody…for about a second. No, it doesn’t look like the pair have been in a ketchup fight and is way too one sided to be a Butcher/Brody affair. Come to think of it with the way that Toru Yano beats Rhino up and down the audience it reminds me of Rhino’s ECW work. If that is the case then Rhino has come full circle because he used to absolutely destroy people in that company, but gets himself destroyed here.

The only gore in this fight is the one that Rhino nails through a table after Yano ducks the attack. The spot looks decent, but with another corner having exposed turnbuckles it might have looked niftier to hit the move there. From that point on Rhino never fully recovers even though he almost scores a three count shortly thereafter. Rhino then gets distracted trying to revive the ref who has suffered a bump and combined with a run-in has enough keeping him occupied that he doesn’t notice the chair that Yano wraps around his head.

Abdullah in a “No Holds Barred” Match

George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, once famously said, “Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?” Yet, even rarer is the question asked why the villain from “No Holds Barred” would wrestle The Madman From The Sudan in Puerto Rico.

Yes, this is a random pairing that sees Zeus go outside of the ring to confront Abdullah The Butcher before the match even starts. At least the ring announcer stays professional and follows procedure by giving introductions as the two are walloping each other. Giving props where they are do, I have to admit that seeing Zeus get Abby in a bear up and lift him off the ground is pretty awesome…conversely, the rest of the match isn’t. Dragging on, the encounter consists of a lot of chokes, the two slowly bumping into each other and grinding. Hey! Get a room you two!

Tommy “Tiny” Lister’s in-ring career would not last long so there are only a handful of matches that have Zeus popping up. Too bad because if Zeus had a couple of Wrestlemania paydays maybe he would’ve been less inclined to commit mortgage fraud.

A Rematch From 1894

Even the commentators have to joke about this match by pointing out how way, way over the hill both competitors are. You have Abdullah with love handles that would be dripping down to the floor if it weren’t for his pants and Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan is…quite frankly in pretty good shape. I mean don’t get me wrong he still looks like a hobbit, but a hobbit who knows his way around a gym.

Sabu makes an appearance late to join the mayhem as does…Syxx-Pac? Reminds me a bit of that Sesame Street song, “One of These Things is Not Like the Other.”

Hogan Hulks Up On Abdullah

This match is remarkable for featuring two huge names in wrestling history while they were both still in pretty good shape. Abdullah The Butcher is still packing some back fat, but at least it doesn’t hang that much here and look! Hulk Hogan barely has any baldness at all!

As I have shown before Hulk Hogan in Japan was often a different beast than Hulk Hogan wrestling in the United States. Yet, this battle is not too different from the big man contests he had in America with the likes of Andre The Giant, King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd. Although there are some things that may surprise you such as the big splash Hogan pulls out, which just looks so out of place being performed by the Hulkster.

Abdullah The Butcher Carves Up Giant Warrior

Since it has been a while since I posted some classic WWC action I thought I would write about this little gem. Yes, Abdullah in WWC in a match featured “The Bloody Bloody Matches of the Caribbean #2,” so you can expect an oozing bloodbath.

Some random thoughts:

*Abdullah apparently throws the WWC tape library at Giant Warrior early on. No wonder so much WWC footage is bad quality!

*I wonder if Carlos Colon made Giant Warrior wear those white pants. Regardless, they really sell how violent the match is as they quickly become red.

*I’m used to seeing basketball hoops on the indies in America, but I guess in Puerto Rico they don’t bother taking them down even in their arenas.

*Upon initially finding this match it made me think of a potential Abdullah The Butcher vs. The Ultimate Warrior match. I’m sure that would be a train wreck, but an entertaining train wreck, much like this match.

* Spoiler Alert! The ref throws the match out after getting hit in the head with a boot by Warrior. You have to love those WWC rules as leading up to this the competitors had spent the entire match destroying each other with foreign objects.

Abdullah The Conqueror

A unique aspect of Abdullah The Butcher’s tenure in WWC is that beyond simply being given a monster push, he was brought in as the first holder of the WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship. Abdullah and a few select others such as Andre The Giant and rival Bruiser Brody had auras surrounding them that must be impossible to reproduce today now that wrestling is as saturated as it is.

One could then only imagine being a citizen of The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and watching Abdullah unleash on Carlos Colon. The announcers here oversell the riot as it was captured on camera. However, who knows what happened when the cameras went off? This is made worse by the fact that Oscar Martinez of NBC’s The Office is the only one trying to keep control as the guest referee.
