Sara Del Rey Gets Her Roxx Off

If the people behind Ring of Honor’s YouTube page are honest then people pushing for women’s wrestling within the company did a terrible job in 2009. The description for this video reads, “The best Women of Honor match to take place on ROH on HDNet this year.” Sure, it is by no means a bad match, but no respectable women’s division should have a match under five minutes as their top television bout of the year. I guess they figured they had Austin Aries holding the ROH World Championship that year and that was all that mattered.

Anyway, this brief encounter between Sara Del Rey and Nikki Roxx starts off with a shoving match and Del Rey also gets a smack in. Roxx charges and Del Rey counters with a Koppou kick. Soon Del Rey is tossing Roxx by her hair all over the place. The crowd gets behind Roxx, but abruptly stops their cheers and stomps.

The two hit a pair of big boots on each other and it is a race to see who can get to their feet. Del Rey wins, but gets a chinbreaker. Roxx hits a beauty special, but only gets two.

The match ends in short order with a royal butterfly from Del Rey. Yeah, it is not exactly Aja Kong/Manami Toyota.

In the Middle of Trios Chaos

Above, Bryce Remsburg gives his final report on the 2012 edition of CHIKARA’s King of Trios Tournament. Included are interviews with The Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield, Mark Angelosetti and Matt Classic aka Colt Cabana) and UltraMantis Black.

Since then the first night of the tournament took place. The results are as follows:

The Batiri (Kobald, Kodama and Obariyon) defeated Gran Akuma and 3.0 (Scott Parker and Shane Matthews)

Jigsaw, Manami Toyota and Mike Quackenbush defeated The Swarm (combatANT, deviANT and Soldier Ant)

Team Sendai Girls (Dash Chisako, Meiko Satomura and Sendai Sachiko) defeated The Colony (assailANT, Fire Ant and Green Ant)

F.I.S.T. (Johnny Gargano, Icarus and Chuck Taylor) defeated Team Osaka Pro (Kikutaro, Ebessan and Takoyakida)

Team JWP (Command Bolshoi, Kaori Yoneyama and Tsubasa Kuragaki) defeated The Throwbacks

The Spectral Envoy (Frightmare, Hallowicked and UltraMantis Black) defeated Kazuaki Mihara, The Mysterious and Handsome Stranger and Tito Santana substituting for Submission Squad (Davey Vega, Evan Gelistico, Gary Jay and Pierre Abernathy)

Team Ring of Honor (Mike Bennett, Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson aka The Young Bucks) defeated The Faces of Pain (Meng, The Barbarian and The Warlord)

The Extreme Trio (Jerry Lynn, Tommy Dreamer and Too Cold Scorpio) defeated Team WWF (1-2-3 Kid aka Syxx-Pac, Aldo Montoya aka Justin Credible and Tatanka)

I’m a little disappointed that some of the nostalgia acts won’t be advancing, but at least we got these awesome pictures out of it:

Since Jigsaw, Manami Toyota and Mike Quackenbush advanced last night I figured I’d post an old Podcast-A-Go-Go from last year’s King of Trios in anticipation of tonight’s event. Here, the team takes on Amazing Red and The Maximos/The S.A.T. (Joel Maximo and Wil Maximo) in a first round match. Gavin Loudspeaker is a bucket of excitement as always in hyping the match. Toyota gets a huge pop when she first comes in and kicks Amazing Red out of the ring. Meanwhile, Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw show why they have been a team for so long.

If you are interested in reading further King of Trios results I will be tweeting tonight and tomorrow’s results @dcjohnson86.

Toyota is Simply the Best

Two of AJW’s top talents fight it out title for title in this breathtaking encounter. At stake are the All Pacific Women’s Championship and the IWA World Women’s Championship. The former title would eventually have a nearly thirty year history and be held by notable women such as Leilani Kai, Bull Nakano and Aja Kong. Manami Toyota held the latter title for over two years when this match took place and had no intention of losing it.

Toyota’s opponent Kyoko Inoue was a diverse talent being able to throw smaller women around like Aja Kong, but being able to nearly match the aerial maneuvers of Toyota. Plus, she gets bonus points for looking like The Ultimate Warrior if he was a Japanese woman. Shame she did not use his entrance music.

Once the match starts The Ultimate Inoue makes it a point to attack Toyota’s legs early on. In between some submission moves I’ve rarely, if ever seen before she performs a spinning toe hold before changing focus. She then locks in a camel clutch followed by a torture rack.

Upon escaping the rack Toyota attempts to build up some momentum by hitting a second rope dropkick, but is momentarily brought down with a powerbomb. Toyota comes back with some high impact moves and before Inoue knows it she is locking on her own submissions. After Toyota rolls Inoue around the ring about a hundred times she gets a super close two count. Toyota then goes up top, but is hurled off the ropes by Inoue.

In control Inoue then hits some power moves before hitting an amazing elbow drop from the top. Unfortunately for her, in short order Inoue is launched out of the ring and Toyota jumps on the middle of the top rope and tackles Inoue outside.

Back inside Manami hits a picture perfect German suplex for two and Kyoko lazily kicks out. Some action on the ropes happens next, but it is not long before they are back outside and just as quickly back in again. There, Manami scores two top rope dropkicks, but misses a moonsault. Kyoko gets a stunning top rope slam off of Toyota and gets a two count.

Inoue revisits the beginning of the bout by going back to a submission, but Toyota reaches the ropes. Following this up, Toyota then gets four two counts when she reverses a powerbomb attempt, performs another German suplex, hits a tiger suplex and completes a moonsault. Up next, Toyota nails two Japanese ocean cyclone suplexes, but only gets two after the second one. Looking desperate Inoue knocks Toyota down with a lariat.

After some down time Inoue gets off a top rope gut wrench suplex and a powerbomb variation. Toyota tries to come back by bouncing off the ropes, but slips and takes a nasty spill. The end comes when Toyota is just able to get Inoue down for the three after a lightening quick sunset flip.

Females Fighting for a 5 Star Match…And Their Hair

This bout proves that the key to having a truly classic match whether it is ranked by Dave Meltzer as a 5 star match or not is to have not only superior in-ring work, but high stakes as well. I remember when The Rock and John Cena’s Wrestlemania match was teased as being for the WWE Championship. At the time I saw that many online were against this as it seemed like it would be gilding the lily and make the card too thin. Hey maybe those people online were right. Yet, to quote Billy Idol “too much is never enough” and so here is Manami Toyota taking on Toshiyo Yamada not only for the IWA World Women’s Championship, but also for their hair.

When the match starts out it almost looks like it is stuck on fast forward, but surprisingly Toyota and Yamada really are that nimble. Complimenting their quickness is their expert in-ring psychology. When Yamada takes Toyota’s leg puts it behind her head and just starts wrenching it then you know Toyota’s legs are going to be in for a pounding. This is further supported about seven minutes into the bout when Yamada gives some really stiff kicks to Toyota’s leg before putting her in a beautiful looking single leg Boston crab.

As the match progresses it becomes apparent that Taz must has stolen “the human suplex machine” moniker from one of these women as they go through just about every suplex variation (except perhaps a standard vertical suplex). Aside from these moves their are also some dangerous spots thrown in such as Toyota hitting a top rope Asai moonsault to the outside.

After the match the story continues to unfold. Since the two are regular partners and friends the winner is unwilling to shave the head of the loser.

All this plus you have perhaps the worst looking referee shirt in the history of Dave Meltzer 5 star matches.

Going Ape for a 5 Star Match

As promised a little while ago, here is some classic women’s wrestling. This is quite a match to start with and puts just about anything mainstream wrestling has produced in the last five years to shame with the exception of Punk/Cena.

Ric Flair is often called a great worker because virtually any match he is in he sells like crazy and gives the impression that his opponent is killing him. In this match Manami Toyota nearly puts Flair to shame. Toyota is unique though in that in addition to screaming while being attacked, she also screams while on the offense and comes off as something somewhere between a banshee and a Braveheart warrior.

Flair is not the only one Toyota one-ups. At one point she counters with a cross body off the top rope. Not the post of the top rope mind you, but the middle of the top rope like Spider-Man. Shelton Benjamin would be jealous!

As good as Manami is, Aja Kong works as a near perfect power wrestler for the duration of the match as a great complement to Manami. The running dominator move she hits in particular has to be seen to be believed.

Dave Meltzer gave this match his coveted 5 star rating. After watching it you’ll see exactly why.
