“Superstar” TJ Powers vs. Rex Diamond
Pro Wrestling International (PWI) has a an ad for the PWI Hotline before this bout between “Superstar” TJ Powers and Rex Diamond, just in case you were wondering if this was an old school clip or not. This bout was a coming out for Powers who previously had a more generic look, but after slapping on a jacket from a failed hair metal band only then could be called, “Superstar” by PWI logic.
Of course he’s a superstar, look at that mustache! Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if Powers went to The Rick Rude School of Mustache Grooming, earning his associate’s, but dropping out before completing his bachelor’s.
Dave Yearwood and Dallas James call the action with James putting Powers over huge saying, there is, “No tougher man or no better partner.” Powers’ opponent, Diamond is decked out in solid black (so you know he’s a heel) and cheats just a little throughout. After getting Irish whipped by Powers, Diamond comes back with a clothesline and Powers looks to be in trouble. Diamond follows up by working Powers’ leg, which Powers sells quite well. Despite taking a piledriver, Powers comes back with a belly-to-belly suplex then goes up top for a move the commentators call a shooting star. My first thought was, “No way is that mustachioed man going to hit a shooting star press.” And I was right! The shooting star is just a top rope “Macho Man” Randy Savage elbow. Oh yeah!

The Old School Flashback series has plenty more PWI action which you can see here and here. For a photo of another graduate of The Rick Rude School of Mustache Grooming click here.
