Indie Flashback: Wayne Mattei Takes on NC Viper

by Daniel Johnson

Wayne “The Maniac” Mattei vs. “The Aboriginal Original” NC Viper

This match from All Action Wrestling (AAW) aka NWA Australia occurred at AAW Unleashed 2012. The show featured a pretty stacked card for an Australian indie with Wayne “The Maniac” Mattei and “The Aboriginal Original” NC Viper being lucky to get one of only two spots reserved for singles matches that night.

Before I get into the action I just wanted to take a second and point out how sweet the nickname “The Aboriginal Original” is. The fact that Viper wears a Superman tank top gets me a bit distracted and makes me want to watch a vintage Chris Hero match instead, but that moniker more than makes up for it. As for the in-ring performers both Mattei and Viper are pretty big guys so there is not a lot of fast paced maneuvers. At one point Viper does a suicide dive from under the bottom rope though. I can’t recall the last time I saw a move like that performed and it is pretty unique. Despite odd aerial maneuvers and spitting some mist in the face of Mattei, Viper takes the loss in this one after a chokeslam. Following the match Mattei shakes Viper’s hand, which is a little strange seeing as how Viper just tried to cheat to win a short match by spraying mist in Mattei’s eyes.

Despite coming out with the short end of the stick “The Aboriginal Original” is still working for AAW to this day. In fact at AAW Unleashed 2014 Viper challenged AAW Heavyweight Champion Danny Andrews for the AAW Heavyweight Championship.
