Big Van Walter vs. Mark Haskins
Since Germany murdered Brazil yesterday by a score of 7-1 in the 2014 FIFA World Cup I thought it would be neat to have this edition of Indie Flashback feature a match from Germany. This Westside Xtreme Wrestling (WXW) match is from the WXW 16 Carat Gold Tournament 2011, which is kind of like WXW’s World Cup.
In this match from the quarter finals, Big Van Walter (currently going by Big Daddy Walter) took on Mark Haskins in a contrast of styles. Although Walter is incredibly agile for a big man compared to Haskins his move set is much, much more grounded. Haskins shows off his speed from the start by dropkicking Walter then hitting him with some punches in a corner of the ring followed by two more dropkicks. The dynamic of the match sees Haskin’s speed work against him as his first big blunder comes when he misses a move off the ropes and get hit with a boot to the face and a slam.
Perhaps the most impressive part of this match are the brief, yet well developed back and forth sequences between Walter and Haskins. In one exchange Walter nearly powerbombs Haskins, but Haskins wiggles out and Walter tries to sit on Haskins, but misses.
As the match winds down Haskins hits a stunning combination of moves including a top rope hurricanrana, a dropkick and a shooting star press from the top rope. In the end though it is like if Brian Kendrick took on Stan Hansen. For all the aerial maneuvers Haskins pulls off Walter wins it with a simple (but vicious) lariat.
